Washington District Elementary School prioritizes safety and seeks opportunities to prepare for emergency response. During the beginning weeks of school, it is important for staff and students to practice safety drills, including fire and lockdown, to support understanding of the necessary skills and procedures.

Students practiced evacuating the building during the fire drill, moving quickly and calmly to designated assembly points. Principal Kayla Yocum said, "Members of the Washington District Volunteer Fire Department, who serve as our partners in education, joined us for one of our fire drills. They observe our response practice and look through the building following the drill to provide feedback on improving our practice. As first responders in our area, they support us in helping to ensure safety and security are maintained at our school." Following the safety drill, students learned more about the equipment used by our firefighters and were eager to ask questions.

Principal Kayla Yocum shares, "Our goal is to ensure that our students and staff know exactly what to do in case of an emergency. These drills are not just routine but essential for fostering a safe learning environment."

The school plans to conduct drills regularly throughout the academic year, as ongoing practice is key to ensuring everyone remains calm and prepared in the event of an actual emergency.
