At Washington District Elementary School, the safety and well-being of our students and staff remain among our highest priorities. During the first week of the school year, students and staff have participated in both lockdown and fire drills designed to strengthen our ability to respond calmly, quickly, and appropriately during an emergency. Throughout each drill, students and staff demonstrated an impressive ability to listen carefully, follow directions, and respond promptly to expectations.

“These drills are an opportunity for us to practice what to do so that, if an emergency ever occurs, our students and staff can respond with confidence and know that the adults around them are prepared to keep them safe,” shares Principal Kayla Yocum.

Fire drills allow students and staff to practice safely exiting the building, following designated evacuation routes, moving to assigned locations, and accounting for everyone. Lockdown drills provide practice for responding to a potential threat inside or near the school by following established procedures designed to protect students and staff.

Conducting these drills early in the school year is especially important because our school family includes students and staff who are learning new routines, classrooms, locations, and procedures. Regular practice helps make safety responses familiar and reinforces the importance of remaining calm, listening to trusted adults, and following directions during an emergency.

The first week of school drills demonstrated that our Roadrunners are already building strong safety habits. Students responded promptly, staff members remained focused and attentive, and our entire school community worked together to practice the procedures that help keep our school safe.

Safety preparedness is an ongoing process. At Washington District Elementary School, we will continue to conduct required safety drills throughout the school year and use each opportunity to evaluate our procedures, identify areas for improvement, and strengthen our collective readiness.

Our goal is simple: practice with purpose so that we are prepared to respond with confidence when it matters most.
