Beginning-of-the-year i-Ready Inform Assessment results have been sent home with students. These reports give families valuable information about their child’s current academic skills in Reading and Mathematics and help us identify strengths and areas where additional support or continued growth may be needed.
At Washington District Elementary, we believe assessment data is not simply a score—it is a tool that helps us better understand how we can support each student. Teachers use information from i-Ready and other classroom assessments to plan instruction, monitor progress, and provide students with opportunities to strengthen specific skills.
Connecting Data to the Third Grade Success Act
West Virginia’s Third Grade Success Act emphasizes the importance of building strong foundations in literacy and numeracy during the early elementary years. The law establishes a statewide approach that includes benchmark assessments, early identification of reading and mathematics deficiencies, evidence-based instruction, and a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) for students who need additional assistance.
The Act specifically calls for assessments in grades kindergarten through third grade to help identify students who may need additional support and monitor their progress throughout the school year.
What Does This Mean for Your Child?
Our goal is to use assessment information intentionally to meet students where they are and help them move forward.
Through our MTSS process, students may receive different levels of support based on their individual needs. This can include:
High-quality Tier 1 instruction is
provided to all students in the classroom
Additional targeted instruction or intervention
for students who need support with specific skills
More intensive, individualized support
when students demonstrate a need for additional intervention
Progress monitoring
to determine whether interventions are helping students grow
Collaboration among teachers, families, and school staff
to ensure students receive the support they need
The Third Grade Success Act also emphasizes family engagement and partnership in supporting students' literacy and numeracy development.

Receiving an i-Ready report does not mean that a child is being defined by a score. Instead, the report gives us a starting point. It helps teachers identify what students already know, what they are ready to learn next, and where additional opportunities for growth may be beneficial.
